Each state, territory and the District of Columbia appoint an Attorney General who serves as their chief legal officer and representative of the people. Attorneys general serve as legal advocates representing their communities by prosecuting federal crimes, counseling state government agencies and legislatures on legal matters and defending lawsuits brought by individuals or parties against the government.

Letitia James’ office is dedicated to combatting violent crime, protecting public safety, protecting consumers, and advancing economic justice for all. Additionally, regional offices engage in local community affairs while investigating complaints in key areas like consumer fraud, charitable donations and workers’ rights.

Brooklyn NY

The attorney general of New York serves as the state’s chief law enforcement official and as part of Cabinet, serves as legal advisor to President of United States and represents government in civil litigation cases.

The Eastern District of New York stands out as one of the premier U.S. Attorney’s Offices nationwide, covering three boroughs from New York City’s five boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island) along with both suburban counties on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk).

The Brooklyn District Attorney has adopted an effective strategy for reducing gun violence: listen and work with community, police and violence interrupters while not speaking in absolutes and making incremental change case by case. They prioritize public safety through investments in Digital Evidence Lab and Ghost Gun Unit as well as increased outreach efforts with affected communities and violence interrupters.

Manhattan NY

The New York State Attorney General’s Office is an integral component of state government, serving to advise the executive branch as well as defend actions and proceedings on its behalf. The Civil Rights Bureau of the Attorney General’s Office strives to combat discrimination faced by New Yorkers across the state. It investigates complaints and sues those who commit violations of law; furthermore, it promotes equal justice by working towards fair enforcement of laws.

Letitia James has served as Attorney General since 2019. As Public Advocate, she made history as the first woman of color ever elected citywide office and made it a powerful source for change – from combatting pay gaps and predatory lending practices, to investigating NYPD stop-and-frisk policies.

Bronx NY

The Attorney General of New York serves as the state’s chief legal officer and oversees its Department of Law. Their office acts as the protector of legal rights of residents, organizations and natural resources in New York while also advising the executive branch and defending actions and proceedings on behalf of New York.

The Attorney General’s Office comprises a team of attorneys known as assistants or deputies, investigators, and support staff. Furthermore, the AG publishes written legal opinions known as the AG’s Opinion that provide official guidance on matters of state law.

Many AG offices also feature consumer protection divisions that investigate allegations of fraudulent or deceptive business practices, saving taxpayers millions each year. These divisions often offer hotlines or complaint forms for residents to submit concerns, and may help individuals recover funds owed from businesses engaging in illegal activity. Furthermore, certain AG offices boast Medicaid fraud control divisions to investigate incidents where patients funded through Medicare were neglected.

Queens NY

The Office is one of the most complex in the nation, covering areas as diverse as international terrorism and weapons proliferation; market manipulation; financial fraud; mortgage fraud and mortgage foreclosure fraud. Additionally, they possess one of the Department’s most advanced civil programs focused on consumer, environmental and securities fraud as well as tax evasion.

The Attorney General serves as a primary legal representative for New Yorkers and heads the Department of Law in New York State.
